Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Pleads Guilty

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has taken a plea deal, according to the Detroit Free Press, agreeing to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury. Kilpatrick will serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million and serve five years probation.

The plea deal comes after he was slapped with eight felony charges last March, stemming from accusations that he lied on the witness stand during a police whistle-blower trial about having an extramarital affair with a top aide. The mayor was also charged with two felonies last month for allegedly assaulting a police officer trying to serve a subpoena at his sister’s home. Despite his mounting legal troubles, Kilpatrick, once a rising young star in politics, had refused to resign from his position as mayor until now.
