Spice Girl Melanie Brown has secretly married her boyfriend, music producer
Stephen Belafonte, in Las Vegas in June, according to marriage records in Nevada.
The couple tied the knot on June 6, according to a marriage license filed in Clark County, and first reported by celeb gossip site PerezHilton.com.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Brown’s rep said: “Regarding the marriage, Mel and Stephen have know each other for many years and were great friends first. Now they are deeply in love. The two are very happy together.”
The couple first got together when Brown was pregnant. “He was a really good friend and good support to me during my pregnancy,” she told PEOPLE in a recent interview. “He’s a really sweet guy.”
The former Spice Girl is in the middle of a bitter paternity battle with her ex-boyfriend, Eddie Murphy, over their daughter Angel Iris Murphy Brown. Last week, Murphy released a statement acknowledging paternity of the child and saying he has paid child support.
But Brown, 32, says all the media attention doesn’t bother Belafonte. “We don’t really play into that world. We just have our own little thing going on.”
Brown was scheduled to appear on Larry King Live on Wednesday, though Access Hollywood reported that Brown canceled due to illness.
Update: Mel is currently under the weather but under the care of a doctor, and – sources tell us – she’s hoping to be well enough to appear on Larry King Live Thursday night to talk about her new marriage and about her bitter baby battle with Eddie Murphy.
